WSDOT Updates: New I-5 sloth stays, Chuckanut landslide to not be clear for several weeks

BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The Washington State Department of Transportation has released an update on the Chuckanut rockslide and a third sloth along I-5.

WSDOT spokesperson RB McKeon says the department regrets that someone has again hoisted a stuffed sloth high in trees above the freeway. Workers have already removed two sloths, but McKeon says this one presents special challenges.

I-5 would have to be shut down and special equipment would need to be rented to remove the sloth. McKeon says the sloth will stay for now.

On Chuckanut Drive, McKeon says WSDOT has not announced when the rocks will be cleared but talk on social media of a July reopening is not accurate.

She does say the road will remain closed between mileposts 9.5 and 10 for several weeks while crews remove loose rock, stabilize the hillside and repair the roadway.

In the meantime, businesses along Chuckanut Drive including Taylor Shellfish and the Oyster Bar remain open and are accessible from Bellingham.
