Wrong-way driver in Blaine blames self-driving car

BLAINE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A wrong-way driver near the border in Blaine is offering a cautionary tale for those using self-driving cars.

The Blaine Police Department said an officer stopped a driver Sunday, May 31 who was traveling south in the northbound lanes on Pacific Highway.

The driver wasn’t impaired and blamed the car’s self-driving feature for the incident.

Blaine Police quipped in a social media post that such technology can be stopped by “simply applying the brakes.”

No one was injured and the driver was ticketed for the incident.

In response to comments on the social media post, Blaine Police clarified that the driver had a Washington state license plates despite traveling near the border.
