WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Wildfire smoke could continue to be an issue this month as fires continue to burn around the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia. That means those of us in Whatcom, Skagit, Island and San Juan counties face the possibility smoke impacts on air quality like those during recent weeks in August.

Again, here are tips on how to prepare for smoke before it arrives:

  • Track local media reports.
  • Pay attention to local government alerts.
  • Check the Northwest Clean Air Agency’s social media (X/Twitter, Facebook, Threads and Instagram) and our website.

Also, be sure to check out these handy resources:

September also means it’s back to school time, with area schools are either already open or ready to open. And if wildfire smoke is in the air when your kids are outside and active, the Washington state Department of Health offers several resources to provide guidance. Two that are particularly helpful are the “Washington Children and Youth Activities Guide for Air Quality” and “Wildfire Smoke Guidance for Canceling Outdoor Events or Activities and Closing Schools.” You can find them and other resources by clicking on this link.

Speaking of schools starting: if you drop off or pick up your kids at their schools and after-school activities, please don’t idle your vehicle’s engine while waiting. It wastes fuel and pollutes the air. Please do your part to cut engine emissions and reduce air pollution.

Remember, the four counties in the Northwest Clean Air Agency’s jurisdiction still have fire safety burn bans or limitations in effect for outdoor burning in rural areas. For the most current information, check these links:

One last note: with fall and winter on the horizon, that means we’re going to soon be entering home heating season. The season begins Oct. 1 and continues through March. Many area residents heat their homes by using wood-fired stoves.

If you burn wood for heat, be sure to use clean, dry wood and follow best practices for burning.

Find more information on NWCAA’s website, nwcleanairwa.gov. Just look for our Wood Heating page.
