Wildfire containment grows across Whatcom County, Washington state

WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Efforts to contain wildfires in Whatcom County and across the state are seeing more progress.

The Luna fire west of Ross Lake is now 34% contained as of Tuesday, Sept 8.  The fire has still spread to roughly 7,700 acres about 10 miles north of Newhalem.

Northeast of Ross Lake, the Border 2 fire remains 73% contained. The fire is burning over 23,000 acres across both sides of the border, with the majority in Canada and about 8,000 acres in the U.S.

The Northwest Clean Air Agency is forecasting air quality to remain at moderate levels across Whatcom County through Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the state’s largest fire, the Little Giant, is burning just over 170,000 acres in Chelan County and is now 81% contained.

Washington’s second-largest blaze, the Sinlahekin fire, is burning about 166,000 acres in Okanogan County and is 67% contained.
