WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Whatcom County is moving ahead with two grant agreements with our state military.

County Councilmembers unanimously approved both agreements during their regular meeting on Tuesday.

One contract involves over $4.1 million to elevate sixteen properties in flood-prone areas. Most of the properties are in Deming, Sumas and Ferndale with four alternative locations noted in the contract.

About 5% of that total will be funded through the Emergency Management Division of the state’s military, while the bulk of it is covered through FEMA.

The second agreement focuses on security measures during the World Cup.

Over $62,000 will be used to procure additional equipment for law enforcement patrolling fan zones throughout Whatcom County. The equipment includes lights, headsets, mounting and towing material, a radio interference tracking device and a respirator for rental or purchase.
