WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – New reports of phone scammers are prompting reminders from local law enforcement.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office says that numerous reports of callers impersonating members of their office were reported on Monday, Feb. 9.

One victim told investigators they lost $4,000 to a scammer claiming to be a member of the sheriff’s office.

Actual deputies and officers will never contact people to demand any type of payments.

The Sheriff’s Office is urging people who receive similar calls to watch out for red flags, like threats of arrest or requests of payment through gift cards or cryptocurrency.

If you think you got a call from these types of scammers, hang up and contact the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line.
