More flood recovery aid will soon be available for Whatcom County families with young children.

Applications opened on Thursday, Jan. 22 for the Healthy Children’s Fund Winter Storm Recovery Assistance Program.

The funds can be used by aid organizations to provide short-term support services, including housing stabilization, basic needs and case management.

“Families with young children are often the most vulnerable following extreme weather events,” said Sarah Simpson, Whatcom County Child and Families Program Supervisor. “Through the Healthy Children’s Fund, we will work with established community partners to deliver direct assistance efficiently while meeting all legal and accountability requirements.”

It will only available for families who are going through pregnancy or have children ages 5 and under.

My Bellingham Now previously reported that the county council voted last month to release up to $750,000 from the Healthy Children’s Fund.

In order to apply, eligible organizations are preferred to have experience serving families with young children and can provide “culturally responsive services,” including language access.

The deadline to apply for the funds is Feb. 23.

According to the Whatcom Long Term Recovery Group, last month’s historic flooding has been estimated to have impacted more than 100 young children in Whatcom County.
