OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Washingtonians will be able to once again file their taxes with the IRS directly for free. The IRS announced earlier this year that the Direct File pilot program will be permanently offered.
It was originally available to certain taxpayers in California, New York, Arizona, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming and Massachusetts.
They’re expanding which states will be eligible for the 2025 tax season as well. So far, 24 states have signed on to participate in the program, which is double the number that participated in the pilot.
States to be added in 2025 include: Alaska, Connecticut, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
In addition, new eligibility standards will allow participation by taxpayers with 1099 income and credits. Those credits include the Child and Dependent Care Credit, Retirement Savings Contributions Credit and the deduction for Health Savings Accounts among others.
