MOUNT RAINIER, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Two Naval aviators who were killed after their fighter jet crashed have been identified.

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island says that Lt. Cmdr. Lyndsay Evans and Lt. Serena Wileman, both 31 years old and from California, were on the jet during a routine training exercise. The EA-18G Growler jet from the Electronic Attack Squadron crashed east of Mount Rainier on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Army Special Forces soldiers were brought in to reach the wreckage, which was located Wednesday, Oct. 16, by an aerial crew. The wreckage is resting at about 6,000 feet in a remote, steep and heavily wooded area east of Mount Rainier.

Search and rescue efforts have shifted into a long-term salvage and recovery operation as the cause of the crash is still being investigated.
