BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – If you’re looking to hit the slopes further south, you’ll have to plan for extra travel time.

KOMO reports that Stevens Pass Ski Area opened for the season on Monday, Dec. 29.

Travelers cannot access the ski area heading east due to road washouts from the flooding we saw earlier this month.

But heading west, a 20-mile stretch of Highway 2 will open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to accommodate winter sports enthusiasts.

Pilot cars will escort vehicles through the final 8 miles of the road, as it remains an active work zone.

Gov. Bob Ferguson announced earlier today that eastbound access could resume with limited schedules as soon as this coming weekend.

In Whatcom County, the Mount Baker Ski Area has plenty of snow and was able to open their iconic Canyon run over the weekend.

The National Weather Service is currently forecasting dry weather at Mt. Baker until New Year’s Day with wet winter weather bringing more snow to the slopes this weekend.
