SKAGOT COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Officials in Skagit County are warning the community over a concerning rise in opioid overdoses.

The Skagit County Health Department issued an overdose spike alert on Tuesday, May 27.

According to the department, there was a “higher than normal” rise in reported overdoses in Mount Vernon last Sunday, May 25. The non-fatal overdoses involved people in their 20’s who are believed to have been using opioids.

The spike comes as Skagit law enforcement has become increasingly concerned about a supply of fentanyl powder in the region that’s particularly potent and unpredictable.

It’s unknown whether Sunday’s incidents are related, but law enforcement believes the trend will continue.

The health department is advising the community to spread the word about the overdose spike and to carry the overdose reversal medication Naloxone.
