SKAGIT COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A local farmworker activist detained by ICE has an immigration hearing set for this fall.

Community to Community Development Participatory Democracy Program Coordinator Liz Darrow confirms that Alfredo “Lelo” Juarez Zeferino will have a court date in November.

Darrow says that Juarez Zeferino’s lawyer is working on his release from the ICE detention center in Tacoma before the hearing, but nothing is certain yet. She adds that conditions are difficult in the facility and hopes that Juarez Zeferino can gain his freedom ahead of the hearing.

“Time moves differently in the facility,” Darrow said. “They don’t turn the lights off and keep the doors locked.”

My Bellingham Now previously reported that Juarez Zeferino was detained on his way to work in Mount Vernon late this March.
