BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Homeowners in Whatcom County continue to battle a stubborn enemy beneath their feet and in their walls: moles and other likeminded rodents. These pests can cause costly property damage, spread disease and disrupt daily life in both rural and urban neighborhoods.

According to Bio Bug Pest Management, a Bellingham-based pest management company, rodent and mole issues are among the most common service calls in the region. The company employs a three-pronged approach to eliminating these pests: inspection, elimination, and prevention.

According to Bio Bug, rodents, including rats and mice, can enter homes through openings as small as a dime. Moles, while mostly staying underground, can tear up lawns and gardens rapidly, especially in wetter months.

“A rat or mice infestation can compromise the health of the structure as well as it’s occupants. Rodent infestations commonly cause thousands of dollars in damage to insulation, wiring, plumbing and other parts of the structure. Prevention of rodents is more cost effective.”

Bio Bug’s integrated pest management begins with a thorough inspection to locate points of entry and assess the extent of the infestation. From there, they implement targeted treatment—using traps or bait stations in the case of rodents, and specialized mole control devices for subterranean pests. Finally, the company focuses on long-term prevention by sealing entry points and advising homeowners on best practices to make their homes less inviting.

Preventing rodent and mole problems starts with good sanitation and home maintenance. Homeowners are advised to keep food sealed and stored properly, eliminate water sources and trim back vegetation near buildings. Sealing gaps in foundations, vents and around pipes is also critical.

For moles, reducing lawn watering can limit their food source—earthworms and grubs. Bio Bug also recommends regular lawn maintenance and, when needed, professional-grade control methods to fully eradicate underground tunnels.

As Whatcom County enters the warmer months, local experts warn that pest activity will only increase, making vigilance essential for homeowners looking to protect their property.
