TACOMA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen’s office says the representative toured the privately-run ICE facility in Tacoma on Friday.

During that time, he toured a portion of the facility including the kitchen, law library, the medical facilities and the housing pods.

In a video from after the tour, Rep. Larsen said that he does not agree with Trump’s policy to arrest 3,000 people a day, but he acknowledges there needs to be more done to support people detained.

“It also means that staffing up this facility to ensure it is serving the people who are detained here – now, about 1,500 people are here,” Larsen said in the video. “That’s nearly double what it was at the beginning of the year, and they aren’t staffed up fully to be able to serve these people every day with even basic services. They say they’re doing their best but falling short.”

Larsen also met with Alfredo “Lelo” Juarez Zeferino, the Skagit Valley farmworker activist that was detained in March of this year.

According to Larsen, Juarez Zeferino is asking for help so he can see his family in the same room before his November court date.

Larsen said he will work to make the visit possible.

He added that he is communicating with a ranking member of the subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security and Enforcement on making sure people in the facility received adequate care.
