WESTERN WASHINGTON (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A heat wave is still on track to hit the region towards the end of this weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for most of western Washington, including Whatcom and Skagit counties, from 11 a.m. Sunday, June 14, through 5 a.m. Tuesday, June 16.

Forecasters are predicting what would be record breaking temperatures to reach the mid-80’s on Sunday and Monday. There’s currently projected to be a moderate heat risk across the region on both those days.

The warm and dry conditions will also bring a heightened risk of fires. Whatcom and Skagit counties will have seasonal burn bans in effect starting Monday for unincorporated areas.

Breezy and cooler conditions are expected to settle in by Tuesday.

Whatcom County Health and Community Services advises people to keep in mind several things during heat waves including:

  • Stay cool indoors
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothes that allow air flow and broad-brimmed hats for sun protection
  • Cover windows that receive significant sun with blinds, awnings or reflective material
  • Do not rely on a fan for cooling down if the temperature is at or above 90 degrees. Instead, make an ice fan to spread cold air.
  • Don’t leave people or animals in cars
  • Check on neighbors, especially elderly individuals
  • Limit outside activities to early morning or evening
  • If you decide to recreate in water, wear life jackets, be wary that most water in our region will be very cold and do not leave children or animals alone in water bodies
