The high school football season is kicking off tonight.
Lynden Christian is hosting Franklin Pierce in a matchup between two teams that made deep runs in the state tournament last year. Coverage begins at 5:30 and kickoff is at 6:00 on KGMI.
After that, Bellingham is hosting defending 2A state champion Archbishop Murphy. That game kicks off at 7:00 from Civic Stadium.
Civic will also be the site of tomorrow’s Friday Night Lights broadcast on KPUG. The four-hour pregame show leads up to a 7:00 kickoff between crosstown rivals Sehome and Squalicum.
The prep girls soccer season is also opening in Whatcom County tonight with seven games, including matches at Lynden, Sehome and Squalicum.
Prep volleyball kicked off last night, with Sehome and Lynden each earning wins to start their season. Coming up tonight, Nooksack Valley and Squalicum are each playing their home openers.

The Mariners are back at T-Mobile Park tonight for the start of their second-to-last homestand of the season.
They’re hosting the Athletics in the first of a four-game series.
The Mariners are coming off a rocky road trip out East where they dropped their first four games before winning their last two in Boston. They need to make a strong stretch run if they want to rally from a five game deficit in the AL West with just 22 games left in the regular season.
The M’s are facing a struggling Athletics club that’s lost five of their last six and own the second-worst record in the majors.
Kade Anderson is on the mound for tonight’s opener against the A’s. Coverage begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KPUG.

The Seahawks are officially under new ownership.
The team announced today that the sale of the franchise to the Khosla family has officially closed. It completes an NFL-record $9.6 billion sale that was approved by league owners last week.
The team says Vinod Khosla will hold the title of chair, while his wife Neeru will be the controlling owner and president of the Seahawks Charitable Foundation. Their son Neal will act as vice chair.
The Seahawks will hold a press conference to formally introduce the Khosla family next Wednesday morning before playing their season opener against the Patriots later that night.

A former Kraken standout has found a new team.
The New York Rangers announced yesterday that they’ve agreed to terms with winger Eeli Tolvanen on a one-year, $1.5 million deal.
The 27-year-old Finn is coming off a 36-point season with Seattle where he skated in 78 out of 82 games.
College Football News
Tensions are rising in college football between the SEC and one of its top schools.
The SEC named LSU in a federal lawsuit today, claiming the university violated conference rules by attempting to recruit and play former NFL players.
The suit comes a day after Georgia’s attorney general wrote a letter to SEC commissioner Greg Sankey yesterday encouraging him to take “all measures available” if the Tigers choose to play former NFL players this season.
