Mariners News

The Mariners are in Minnesota on the heels of a successful opening weekend in the Midwest.

The M’s are opening a three-game series against the Twins tonight after sweeping the Cardinals on the road. Seattle prevailed over St. Louis in an 11-9 barnburner on Saturday before Rob Refsnyder’s go-ahead solo shot in the ninth proved to be the difference in yesterday’s 3-2 win.

The Mariners have won four straight entering tonight’s matchup against a skidding Twins squad that’s five straight and nine of their last ten.

Luis Castillo is on the mound as he searches for his first win of the season. Coverage begins at 3:30 and first pitch is at 4:40 on KPUG.

Seahawks News

Seahawks fans are flying high after an eventful NFL draft over the weekend.

John Schneider and the Hawks doubled their picks, starting the draft with just four before ending up with eight after a few trades.

The team took TCU safety Bud Clark in the second round Friday, followed by Arkansas cornerback Julian Neal. They’ll look to bolster a secondary that lost Cobe Bryant and Riq Woolen in free agency.

Meanwhile, standout UW Huskies receiver Denzel Boston was drafted 39th overall to the Cleveland Browns. Huskies running back Jonah Coleman also went 108th overall to the Denver Broncos.

They were among seven Huskies whose names were called during the draft in Pittsburgh.

Sounders/Reign News

The Sounders extended their unbeaten streak over the weekend.

They topped Dallas FC 2-1 on Saturday behind goals from Jesus Ferreira and Jordan Morris.

The Sounders haven’t lost in MLS play since February 28 as they ride a six-match unbeaten streak. They own the fourth-most points in the Western Conference standings.

Next up, they’ll hit the road for a match against Sporting Kansas City on Saturday.

The Reign had a rougher weekend. They fell to the Utah Royals 3-0, but it was overshadowed by an injury to one of their top players.

Midfielder Jess Fishlock was stretchered off the field after getting hit in the leg by her teammate’s shot. There’s no timeline for her return.

Fishlock announced just last week that she’ll retire at the end of the current season. Besides being the Reign’s all-time assist leader, she’s one of just three active players in the NWSL who have remained in the league since its inception.

The Reign are back on Friday for a road match against the Houston Dash.

WWU Vikings News

Western’s softball team is sitting atop the conference standings after its final homestand of the season.

The Vikings took three out of four games against St. Martin’s over the weekend in a battle between the top two teams in the GNAC.

It started with a bang when pinch-runner Hadley Oylear scored on a wild pitch to deliver a walk-off win in the series opener Saturday. The Vikings also ended the series strong with a dominant 10-2 mercy-rule win yesterday.

They’re now tied with St. Martin’s for first place in the GNAC standings with four games remaining in the regular season.

The Viks will cap off their schedule with a pair of road doubleheaders against Western Oregon this weekend before the GNAC Championships begin a week from Thursday in Ellensburg.

The Mets, Red Sox and Phillies aren’t out — but they’re very much down

Right now, FanGraphs still gives the Red Sox a 34% chance of making the playoffs, and the Phillies and Mets each a 33% chance. That means there's a decent shot one of those three teams will turn it around and reach the postseason. But so far this season has been dire for each of them.
