Northwest Sports Update: Seahawks Super Bowl-bound, WWU basketball sweep doubleheader and more

Seahawks News

The Seahawks are heading to their first Super Bowl in over a decade.

Seattle edged the Los Angeles Rams 31-27 at Lumen Field last night in the NFC Championship. Sam Darnold threw for 346 yards and three touchdowns and Jaxon Smith-Nnjigba had 153 receiving yards and a touchdown in the win.

The Seahawks’ defense came up with a critical fourth down stop on the goal line to secure the game.

They’ll now advance to face the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 60, after the Pats beat the Broncos 10-7. It’s Seattle’s fourth Super Bowl in franchise history and first in 11 years. 

Kraken News

Kraken fans also had plenty to cheer about last night.

Seattle beat the New Jersey Devils 4-2 after scoring three goals in the final period. Matty Beniers and Berkly Catton scored 18 seconds apart in the third to propel the win.

The Kraken will look to end their homestand on a high note tomorrow night when they face the Washington Capitals.

Coverage begins at 6:30 and puck drops at 7 on KGMI.

Meanwhile, the Torrent fell to the Vancouver Goldeneyes 4-1 last night. It was part of the PWHL’s Takeover Tour in Denver.

College Basketball News

Western basketball had a successful home doubleheader on Saturday.

The Vikings women started it off with a 66-40 win over Simon Frasier. Former Lynden Christian teammates Demi Dykstra and Libby Stump combined for 36 points and 14 assists to help the Viks win their third straight.

After that, the men picked up a big 80-68 win over Simon Frasier to snap their three-game skid. Aidan Rice had 19 points to lead all scorers.

They’re back at home on Thursday against Alaska Anchorage, while the women hit the road for a match against Saint Martin’s.

Meanwhile, the Huskies women beat Rutgers 76-48 earlier today to earn their fourth straight win. The UW men handled Oregon 72-57 yesterday.

And the Gonzaga men edged San Francisco 68-66 on Saturday to avoid a major upset. Bulldogs freshman and former Anacortes star Davis Fogle had 15 points and a key last-second rebound to help the Zags win their 14th straight.

HS Basketball News

Taking a look at high school basketball scores from Saturday…

The Ferndale girls beat Burlington-Edison 45-34.

The Ferndale boys fell to Burlington 75-58.

The Blaine boys lost to Orcas Island 74-63.

The Meridian boys lost to Lakewood 75-59.

And the Meridian girls also fell to Lakewood 53-50.
