Seahawks News

The Seattle Seahawks are Super Bowl champions.

Seattle beat the New England Patriots 29-13 last night in Super Bowl 60 to win their second-ever world championship. Kenneth Walker III won MVP, rushing for 135 yards, and the Hawks’ ‘Dark Side’ defense backed him up with 6 sacks and 2 interceptions.

Mike Macdonald capped off a picture-perfect end to his second year in Seattle by becoming the third-youngest head coach ever to win a Super Bowl. You can read MBN’s full game recap here.

The team’s Super Bowl Championship Ceremony is being held at 10 am on Wednesday inside Lumen Field. Tickets for the event went on sale this morning, but sold out in 20 minutes.

After that, the Super Bowl Parade will kick off at 11 am, starting just north of the stadium.

Winter Olympics News

A former Bellinghamster started off the Winter Olympics in perfect fashion for the United States.

Former Western Washington University student Breezy Johnson took home gold in the downhill skiing event yesterday to earn the US’s first medal of any kind during the Milano/Cortina Olympic Games.

She also made history by becoming the first American skier since Lindsey Vonn in 2010 to win the Olympic downhill.

Vonn caught much of the attention yesterday after she wiped out while attempting to ski on a torn ACL. She was airlifted from the course and announced that she fractured her left leg, the same one she ruptured her ACL on just weeks before.

Bells News

Bellingham’s beloved summer ball team will be under new leadership for its title defense this season.

The Bellingham Bells announced that they’ve hired Alan Regier as their next head coach. Regier will succeed Ed Knaggs, who left Bellingham to take an assistant baseball coach position at Gonzaga University.

Regier was most recently an advanced scout for the Colorado Rockies. He brings over 30 years of scouting MLB experience, also spending time with the White Sox, Red Sox, Brewers, Cubs, Braves and Rangers.

He’ll now be tasked with leading a Bells club that’s coming off its second-ever West Coast League Championship.

WWU Vikings News

The Western women’s basketball team picked up another big-time win over the weekend.

The Viks beat Northwest Nazarene 82-54 at Carver Gym on Saturday. They’ve now won three straight games, two of them coming against a pair of the top teams in the GNAC in Central Washington and NNU.

The Viks are currently tied with Saint Martin’s for 2nd place in the conference standings, one game behind first place Central. They’ll look to extend their win streak on Thursday when they travel to face Alaska Anchorage.

Meanwhile, the Western men fell to Seattle Pacific 78-76 on a buzzer beater Saturday. They’ll try to regroup on Thursday when they host Western Oregon.
