Northwest Sports Update: Seahawks strike at trade deadline, Sounders force decisive Game 3, prep soccer and volleyball district championships and more

Seahawks News

The Seahawks made a big move to bolster their offense at the trade deadline.

Seattle acquired wide receiver Rashid Shaheed from the New Orleans Saints today in exchange for fourth and sixth round picks in 2026.

The 27-year-old reunites with offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who coached him last season in New Orleans.

Shaheed has 44 catches for 499 yards and two touchdowns this season.

He also adds a valuable punt and kickoff return option as a former All-Pro kick returner in 2023.

 

Meanwhile, the Seahawks’ next opponent could be coming into their matchup with newfound momentum.

The Arizona Cardinals beat the Dallas Cowboys 27-17 on Monday Night Football yesterday.

Jacoby Brissett threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

The Cardinals announced that Brissett will also get the start in Seattle on Sunday as Kyler Murray continues to recover from a foot injury.

Sounders News

The Sounders kept their season alive with a win last night.

Seattle edged Minnesota United 4-2 to force a decisive Game 3.

Obed Vargas scored two goals to lead the win, as the two clubs will now play a winner-take-all match in St. Paul Minnesota this Saturday.

The winner will advance to the second round of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Kraken News

The Kraken edged the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1 last night.

Jordan Eberle and Matty Beniers each had a goal and an assist to help Seattle avoid dropping their third straight.

The Kraken will cap off their homestand with a match against the San Jose Sharks tomorrow night.

Coverage begins at 6:30 and puck drops at 7 on KPUG.

Mariners News

A pair of Mariners are in the running for two major postseason awards.

Cal Raleigh was named as one of three finalists for the American League MVP yesterday, alongside Aaron Judge and Jose Ramirez.

Dan Wilson was chosen as one of three finalists for AL Manager of the Year, along with former M’s bullpen coach and reigning award winner Stephen Vogt of the Cleveland Guardians and Toronto’s John Schneider.

The Mariners also announced today that they will exercise their $7 million club option on closer Andres Munoz.

They also declined the $12 million option on Mitch Garver’s contract, sending the catcher to free agency.

HS Soccer/Volleyball News

There’s several district championship games taking place in local prep sports over the next two days.

Coming up later tonight, Lynden Christian is playing Nooksack Valley in the 1A district volleyball championship.

Winner moves on to the state tournament, loser will face either Blaine or Meridian on Thursday for a second stab at state.

Their match starts off at 7:30 at Meridian High School.

Tomorrow night, Lynden is taking on Sehome in the 2A district volleyball title game.

Both teams are already state bound.

 

Meanwhile, in girls’ soccer, Sehome is hosting Anacortes at 7 pm tomorrow for the 2A district title game at Civic Stadium.

Both teams have already secured a spot at the state tournament, while Bellingham and Lynden are playing each other for a chance to go to the district crossover.

In Class 1A, Lynden Christian is playing Nooksack Valley at Blaine High School at 7:30 tomorrow for the district championship with a ticket to state on the line.

The loser will face either Meridian or Blaine on Saturday for another chance to go to state.
