Mariners News
The Mariners are looking to bounce back tonight from a blowout loss in Tampa Bay.
The M’s fell to the Rays 10-2 in their series opener. Luis Castillo gave up five runs in four innings and Seattle didn’t score until Leo Rivas hit a 2-run homer in the ninth inning. They’ve now lost four of their last five following a series loss to the Cleveland Guardians over the weekend.
On the bright side, the team called up one of their top prospects yesterday. Seattle promoted 22-year-old Harry Ford to the majors as the fourth-ranked prospect in their farm system. Manager Dan Wilson says he’ll give the team some flexibility as a third catcher behind Cal Raleigh and Mitch Garver.
The Mariners have a chance to even their series against Tampa today with ace Bryan Woo taking the mound. First pitch is at 4:35 on KPUG.
Sounders News
The Seattle Sounders are Leagues Cup Champions. The Sounders blanked Lionel Messi and Inter Miami 3-0 in the tournament final at Lumen Field on Sunday to become the only MLS team to have won all five annual tournament trophies.
Osaze DeRosario headed in a goal for his fourth score in Leagues Cup play before Alex Roldan and Paul Rothrock each scored insurance goals near the end to close out Miami. By winning the annual tournament, which features clubs from the MLS and Mexico’s Liga MX, the Sounders earned a bye into the round of 16 in next year’s Champions Cup.
The win was nearly overshadowed by a postgame brawl between the two teams. Videos posted on social media appeared to show Miami’s Luis Suarez spitting on a Sounders staff member.
Huskies/Cougs News
The Huskies and Cougs each picked up wins over the weekend.
UW beat Colorado State 38-21 in their season opener at home on Saturday. Jonah Coleman ran for 177 yards and 2 touchdowns and Demond Williams Jr. threw for 226 yards and rushed for 68 more in the win.
The victory was Washington’s 21st straight at Husky Stadium, extending the longest run in modern school history.
It was a bit closer for the Cougs, who edged Idaho 13-10 in Pullman. Jack Stevens kicked a 32-yard field goal with three seconds left to deliver the win.
Wazzu quarterback Jaxon Potter threw for 208 yards and a touchdown in his first college start. It was also the first win with Washington State for new head coach Jimmy Rogers.
A basketball legend who used to coach at Washington State has died. Hall of Fame basketball coach George Raveling passed away at the age of 88 following a battle with cancer, according to his family.
Raveling led Wazzu to 166 wins between 1972 and 1983, while winning Conference Coach of the Year twice and making two appearances in the NCAA tournament.
He’s known for playing a critical role in Michael Jordan signing a landmark endorsement deal with Nike. Jordan said in a statement that he signed with Nike because of Raveling and noted that without him, there would be no Air Jordan.
Storm News
The Storm hit a snag in their road to the playoffs last night. They fell to the Los Angeles Sparks 91-85 after LA made a furious second-half quarter rally.
The Storm led by 14 points at halftime, but the Sparks outscored them by 20 points in the second half to help keep their season alive. LA now sits just a game and a half behind Seattle for the final playoff spot in the WNBA.
The Storm have a few days off before playing their second-to-last game of the season on Friday against the New York Liberty.
