WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Heavy rain over the weekend has prompted a flood watch for Whatcom and Skagit counties,

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued the watch for both counties through Tuesday morning, Jan. 13. It says heavy rainfall in the North Cascades over the past few days could bring excessive runoff that raises the risk of river flooding.

The Nooksack River at Ferndale is currently forecast to crest just below the minor flooding stage around 10 am on Tuesday. No other locations in Whatcom County are expected to breach the action stage. You can view all the area’s up-to-date river level forecasts through the National Water Prediction Service.

The Skagit River at Mount Vernon and Concrete are also both forecast to crest just below the minor flooding stage on Tuesday.

NWS also warns that “very dangerous” avalanche conditions are developing in the North and Central Cascades. It comes days after an avalanche southwest of Leavenworth killed two people on Friday, Jan. 9.
