BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Signs are going up in an effort to slow drivers down across Bellingham.

Crews from the city’s Public Works Department began installing new 20 mph speed limit signs on some residential roads Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Impacted roads include the downtown business core and any residential street where limit sign aren’t directly posted.

My Bellingham Now previously reported that the Bellingham City Council voted unanimously to begin lowering speed limits in June.

Shortly after the vote, My Bellingham Now spoke with Robin Thomas with Walk and Roll Bellingham, a proponent for the move to lower speed limits. Thomas said that other, larger cities have begun to lower the speed limits to improve safety.

Bellingham Police officers will be enforcing the new limits once school is in session, but drivers will get warnings until then.

The full rollout of the new limits will take three years to complete.
