MOUNT BAKER, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The Mt. Baker Ski Area has temporarily closed due to dangerous avalanche conditions.

The ski area was closed on Monday, March 24 and will remain closed through Tuesday, March 25.

All facilities at the ski area will be closed during that time and Mt. Baker Ski Patrol will not respond for rescue, so anyone who recreates on National Forest land is doing so at their own risk.

It comes as the Northwest Avalanche Center is warning of very high avalanche danger in backcountry areas of the east slopes of the North Cascades and considerable danger in the west slopes through 6:30 p.m. on March 24.

The temporary closure interrupts an otherwise busy month for Mt. Baker with skiers and snowboarders enjoying the late-winter snowfall. The ski area says it’s received more than 10′ of snowfall in March as of Saturday, including over 6′ in the past week.

Baker is expected to re-open on Wednesday, March 26 with snowfall anticipated on Thursday.

You can find more information on the mountain’s closure and the avalanche advisory on the Mt. Baker Ski Area website.
