The Mariners are kicking off a critical division showdown tonight.

They’re hosting the Texas Rangers in the first of a three-game series as they continue their second-to-last homestand of the regular season.

The M’s are coming off a brutal series loss to the Athletics that saw them drop three out of four games in a major setback to their playoff hopes. They now sit six games out of first place in the AL West with just 18 games remaining.

The weekend also saw the major-league debut of the team’s third-ranked prospect Michael Arroyo. The 21-year-old outfielder went 0-3 in Sunday’s win over the A’s.

The Mariners now enter a crucial series against the Rangers, who sit two games behind the Astros for first place in the AL West. Texas owns the season series 7-3 entering tonight’s opener.

Seahawks News

The Seahawks are gearing up for their season opener.

The defending champs will have their championship banner raised tomorrow night before they open the NFL season against the New England Patriots in a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl.

Seattle could be a bit thin in their secondary, with starting safety Ty Okada ruled out for the game and Nick Emmanwori still listed as questionable.

Meanwhile, the Patriots ruled out second-year running back TreVeyon Henderson.

But New England will have their star cornerback Christian Gonzalez available after a contract dispute led to him nearly missing the game. ESPN reports the Pats agreed to a four-year, $135 million deal with Gonzalez last night to make him the highest-paid corner in the NFL.

The Seahawks will look to double-down on their Super Bowl win in tomorrow’s opener. Coverage begins at 3:00 tomorrow and kickoff is at 5:20 on KPUG.

UW Huskies News

The Huskies lost some ground in the latest AP Top 25 poll.

UW fell two spots to No. 19 in the country after voters weren’t convinced by their Apple Cup win over Washington State.

Jedd Fisch announced yesterday that the team will be without two of their top running backs for an extended period of time. Starter Quaid Carr and backup Jayden Limar each suffered injuries in Sunday’s win that could force them to miss most of the season.

College Football News

In other news from the latest rankings, Oregon fell four spots to No. 6 after a tight win over unranked Boise State.

And Michigan fell out of the rankings after a controversial last-second win over Western Michigan. The Mid-American Conference has appealed the outcome of the game, where the Wolverines won on a touchdown pass after the replay official put one second back on the clock.

The MAC is claiming the officials didn’t follow proper replay protocol and is asking the NCAA to recognize the Broncos as the true winners of the game. 

There was plenty of other college football drama across the country today.

The SEC has scheduled a vote of conference presidents on Thursday to decide whether to expel LSU from the league. ESPN reports the conference is not expected to take such action, but that it reflects the seriousness of the league after the Tigers tried to add a pair of former-NFL players to their team.

The outlet also reports that leaders of the College Football Playoff are showing renewed interest in expanding the CFP field from 12 to 24 teams as soon as 2027.

Running down high school football scores from the opening weekend of the season…

Squalicum shut out Sehome 26-0 in their cross-town showdown on Friday.

Lynden welcomed Sultan to the Northwest Conference with a 49-0 thumping.

Ferndale topped Everett 34-12.

Mount Baker demolished Port Angeles 56-6.

And Meridian fell to Liberty Bell 30-27.

On Saturday, Lummi Nation rallied from a halftime deficit to stun Crescent 28-22.

Blaine beat Ilwaco 42-7.

Nooksack Valley edged Cascade Christian 14-7.

Sounders/Reign News

The Sounders got another point on Saturday. 

Seattle’s Andrew Thomas and New York’s Ethan Horvath combined for 10 saves as the Sounders and Red Bulls played to a scoreless draw.  It was a third straight draw for Seattle following a club-record eight-match losing streak. 

Meanwhile, the Reign got the job done, beating San Diego Wave FC 1-0 on Sunday.
