The Mariners are cleaning house after their underwhelming season came to an end.
The team announced yesterday that Dan Wilson will not return as manager. The former Mariners catcher went 187-171 since taking over late in the 2024 season.
The team followed it up by announcing earlier today that four key members of the coaching staff won’t return either, including bench coach Manny Acta, hitting coach Kevin Seitzer, infield coach Perry Hill and first base coach Eric Young Jr.
The Mariners picked up a pair of wins on Saturday and Sunday to end the season with a 76-86 record, finishing five games behind the Houston Astros, who won the AL West with a .500 record.
Yesterday’s 7-3 win over the Angels also marked Rick Rizzs’ final game as the radio voice of the M’s, capping off a legendary 41-year career for the soon-to-be Mariners Hall of Famer.
Meanwhile, the MLB playoffs are officially set.
It starts tomorrow morning, when the Braves host the Phillies in the playoff opener at 11 am. After that, the Astros host the White Sox, the Yankees host the Red Sox and the Padres host the Cubs in the start of the best-of-three Wild Card round.
The Rays, Guardians, Dodgers and Brewers all have a first-round bye.
Seahawks News
Seahawks fans are still recovering from a shocking upset yesterday.
Seattle fell to the Washington Commanders 33-31 to snap their franchise-record 12 game win streak.
Backup Marcus Mariota and the Commanders jumped on three turnovers by the Seahawks, including a 50-yard pick six late in the fourth quarter. Cooper Kupp caught a touchdown with a minute left, but Washington picked up a pair of third down conversions to ice the game.
Sam Darnold threw for 379 yards and four touchdowns in his return from a glute injury, but also threw two picks. Jaxon Smith-Njigba continued his stellar start to the season with 128 yards and two touchdowns, bringing his total to six TDs through their first three games.
The Seahawks now fall to 2-1 on the season ahead of next week’s home matchup against the 0-3 Chargers.
Week 3 of the NFL season caps off tonight when the Bears try to hold off the Eagles without star quarterback Caleb Williams in Chicago. Coverage for Monday Night Football begins at 4:00 and kickoff is at 5:15 on KPUG.
The Giants made waves earlier today by trading a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Vikings in exchange for former first-rounder JJ McCarthy.
Huskies/Cougars News
The Huskies dropped their first game of the season over the weekend.
They fell to Minnesota 27-24 on Saturday in their Big Ten opener.
The Gophers scored the first two touchdowns of the game and had a 21-7 lead at halftime. UW nearly rallied with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t overcome their slow start.
Demond Williams Jr. threw for 239 yards and had three total touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions.
The Huskies will look to rebound on Saturday when they travel to play 18th nationally-ranked USC.
Meanwhile, the Cougs couldn’t hold onto an early lead as they fell to Arizona 34-24. Washington State scored the first two touchdowns of the game and led by three at the half, but the Wildcats outscored them 20-7 in the second half to take the win.
Wazzu now falls to 1-3 on the season ahead of Saturday’s game against Fresno State.
Sounders/Reign News
The Sounders are starting to gain some momentum.
Seattle beat Minnesota United 3-1 at Lumen Field on Saturday to extend their unbeaten streak to seven. Jordan Morris, Hassani Dotson and Paul Arriola all scored to help coach Brian Schmetzer earn his 150th MLS win.
The Sounders are back in the Western Conference playoff picture win their second straight win after going on a club-record 13-match winless streak.
Meanwhile, the Reign blanked Boston Legacy 2-0 on Friday to move up to 8th in the NWSL standings.
