WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Lummi Nation health officials are warning the community about a dangerous supply of drugs circulating the area.

The Lummi Nation Health Center released a community health alert on Monday, Oct. 6 following multiple overdoses in Whatcom County over the past weekend.

The center says Narcan alone was not enough, and the response required ongoing breathing support.

Preliminary testing suggested the presence of carfentanil and the sedative xylazine, also known as “tranq.”

Carfentanil is a synthetic opioid that can be up 100 times more potent than fentanyl, where even small amounts can cause a rapid overdose or death.

The health center is urging the public to carry Narcan at all times, call 9-1-1 in the event of an overdose and give CPR if a victim is unresponsive.

It comes as emergency room visits from overdoses have fallen in every month since June in Whatcom County, according to whatcomoverdoseprevention.org.
