OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A pair of initiatives addressing the Parents’ Bill of Rights and transgender students in sports are one step closer to hitting lawmakers’ desks.

Let’s Go Washington (LGW) turned in signatures to the Secretary of State’s Office for the initiatives last Friday.

The political action committee says it surpassed its initial goal of 400,000 signatures for each of them.

Although LGW has been labeled as a conservative-leaning group, founder Brian Heywood believes both initiatives have bipartisan support behind them.

“These are those 80/20 issues, they’re not some sort of Republican-MAGA thing,” Heywood told MBN last fall. “They have really strong support among a broad spectrum of people.”

The first initiative seeks to overturn changes made in the state’s last legislative session to the “Parents’ Bill of Rights,” including access that parents have to their student’s records.

The other aims to bar students who were assigned male at birth from participating in female sports.

If the signatures are found to be valid, the initiatives will head to the state legislature, where lawmakers can decide to pass them or send them to voters on the November ballot.
