Prep Football News

Week 6 of the prep football season got kicked off last night.

Lynden Christian fell to defending 2A state champion Archbishop Murphy 24-17 after the Lyncs’ late rally from a halftime deficit fell just short.

Coming up tonight, The Zone’s Friday Night Lights pregame show is live from Mt. Baker High School for the Mountaineers’ homecoming game against Nooksack Valley. It’s a meeting between two of the top 10 1A teams in the state in a rematch of last year’s instant classic.

Allan Fee and crew will be previewing that matchup and all the other ones across the county tonight leading up to the 7:00 kickoff between Baker and Nooksack on KPUG.

Over on KBAI, Lynden is hosting Anacortes in a showdown between two of the top five 2A teams in the state. That game also kicks off at 7:00 with Randy Farmer and the coach Dan Kaemingk on the call.

Elsewhere around the county tonight…

Lummi Nation is on the road against Concrete at 6:00.

Starting at 7, Ferndale hosts Oak Harbor.

Squalicum is at Sultan.

Blaine is home for Meridian.

Bellingham’s celebrating their homecoming in a big cross-town rivalry match against Sehome.

Huskies/Cougs News

The Huskies and Cougs are also playing under the Friday night lights.

UW is aiming to get their first Big Ten win of the season when they host 20th nationally-ranked Iowa at 6:00.

The Huskies are coming off a pair of tight losses to Minnesota and USC, while the Hawkeyes just suffered their first loss of the season to Ohio State.

Iowa will be rolling with their backup quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski tonight in his first college start.

Meanwhile, the Cougs are on the road against Utah State at 6:00. Wazzu will look to avoid dropping their third straight as they wade deeper into conference play in the new-look Pac-12.

Seahawks News

The Seahawks are gearing up for a big rivalry game.

They’re hosting the 49ers on Sunday in a meeting between two of the top teams in the NFL this season.

Seattle’s coming off a win over the Chargers that boosted them to 3-1, while the 49ers topped the Broncos to remain one of the three undefeated teams left in the league.

The Seahawks’ “Dark Side” defense will be tasked with slowing Niners quarterback Brock Purdy, who’s putting together an early-season case for MVP. But the 49ers will be hungry for revenge after getting bounced from the playoffs at Lumen Field last season.

Coverage begins at 11 am Sunday and kickoff is at 1:25 on KPUG.

It comes after the Buccaneers picked up their first win of the season by beating the Cowboys 24-16 last night to kick off Week 5.

NFL News

The sports world is mourning the loss of a football icon.

Legendary former Bears coach and Hall of Fame tight end Mike Ditka has died at the age of 86. No cause of death was given in the announcement by his family earlier today.

Ditka led the Bears to the franchise’s only Super Bowl in 1985 with a team that boasted arguably the greatest defense in NFL history. Before that, he was an All-Pro tight end that became the first at the position to be inducted into Canton.

The Bears retired his No. 89 in 2013, saying it would be the last number retired by the team.

MLB Playoffs News

The divisional round of the MLB Playoffs is wrapping up tomorrow with a winner-takes-all game.

The Guardians used a 6-run sixth inning to beat the White Sox 9-5 last night in Chicago. Cleveland now heads back home for a decisive Game 5 after trailing 2-0 earlier in the series.

The winner of tomorrow night’s game will take on the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALCS. First pitch is at 5:00 from Cleveland.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers and Brewers are starting the NLCS on Sunday in Milwaukee.

Kraken News

The Kraken are back on the ice tonight.

They’re taking on the Red Wings in the Motor City to kick off a five-game road trip out East.

Seattle has traded wins and losses to start off the season as they own a 2-2 record. The Red Wings are coming off their first win of the season against the Senators.

Coverage begins at 3:30 and puck drops at 4 on KGMI.

WWU Vikings News

Western’s women’s soccer team continued its hot streak last night.

They beat Northwest Nazarene 1-0 on the road to win their fifth straight and extend their unbeaten streak to 10.

The Viks, who have shot up to No. 9 in the national coach’s poll, sit at the top of the GNAC standings with six wins and a tie in conference play.

They’re back home tomorrow night for a big match against No. 24 Simon Fraser. That gets underway at 7:00 from Harrington Field.
