BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A Ferndale Police officer involved in the fatal shooting of an attempted homicide suspect has been placed on administrative leave.

Bellingham Police (BPD) say the officer who shot and killed 36-year-old Luis Fernandez last Sunday was placed on leave in accordance with department policy.

The officer was part of a SWAT team called to the incident in Maple Falls.

Fernandez and another woman who was arrested were both wanted in connection to a shooting on the Lummi Reservation the day before, which left a 34-year-old man in critical condition.

BPD, which is leading the investigation into the police-involved shooting, says it will continue to provide weekly updates.

Anyone who may have information or was in the area of the shooting in Maple Falls is still being asked to contact Bellingham Police.

Others who may have information on the initial shooting from the day before on the Lummi Reservation is asked to contact the FBI.
