Experts Urge Whatcom County Residents to Replace HVAC Filters Ahead of Cold Weather

As cooler weather sets in across Whatcom County, the HVAC experts at Feller Heating say one of the simplest ways to keep homes comfortable and heating systems running efficiently this fall is to change air filters regularly.

Air filters trap dust, pollen and other airborne particles, helping to improve indoor air quality while protecting furnaces and heat pumps from unnecessary strain. But when filters become clogged, systems are forced to work harder, which can increase energy bills and even shorten the lifespan of equipment.

“Air filtration is very important for both the air quality in the home, but also for the life expectancy and efficiency of the HVAC system. Cleaning the returning air before it passes back through the heating/cooling elements and the blower motor helps keep the system clean and less likely to have issues. Keeping the filters clean allows your system to breathe properly for seamless airflow and again, less likely to have issues.”

Most HVAC professionals recommend changing disposable filters every one to three months, depending on the type of filter, the number of occupants and whether pets are in the home. With Whatcom County’s damp fall weather, clogged filters can also contribute to musty odors or even mold growth inside ducts.

Replacing filters is a relatively inexpensive step compared to major system repairs, and it is one of the easiest tasks homeowners can do themselves. Many local hardware stores carry a wide range of filter sizes, and homeowners are advised to check their system’s specifications before purchasing replacements.

Experts say fall is an ideal time for the task, as heating systems will soon see heavy use during colder months. Pairing filter replacement with a professional inspection or tune-up can also ensure systems are ready for the season.
