WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Two small wildfires broke out earlier this week in NW Washington.

Monitoring website Frontline said a fire was reported near Colony Road in Skagit County Tuesday, July 14.

The fire has burned about a quarter of an acre so far, but no evacuation orders have been issued for the area.

Across the bay, Washington State Ferries said their crews helped transport additional firefighters to Lopez Island on Monday, July 13 to help fight flames on the west side of the island.

That fire has only burned about a tenth of an acre.

It’s unclear if either wildfire has been fully contained.

Regional wildfires causing drop in air quality

Wildfires across the border are degrading air quality in some parts of Whatcom County.

Monitoring website IQ Air said that quality levels have dipped to “moderate” in Everson and Sumas.

Smoke is traveling south from the massive Brunswick Complex wildfires in B.C., which have burned nearly 50,000 acres since last week.

Firefighting efforts will likely be hampered by a weather pattern shift starting Wednesday night. The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for the west slopes of the Cascades Wednesday evening through Thursday evening, July 16.

Thunderstorms could pop up as cooler weather moves through Whatcom County, leading to a higher risk of lightning-sparked wildfires.
