OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is suing Washington and three other states for denying undercover license plates to federal agents.

The DOJ said in Wednesday’s suits that the states refused to change their policies after being warned they were illegal.

Oregon, Maine and Massachusetts are also named in the suits.

The Justice Department claims the states’ policies prevent some agents from shielding their identities during investigations by using confidential plates.

According to the suits, the states’ policies are unconstitutional and pose a safety threat to agents who are targeted by harassment, while also making it easier for criminals to avoid arrest.

The Washington State Department of Licensing declined to comment on the lawsuit.
