WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Wouldn’t it be helpful to know what to expect from the weather as we head into holiday season?
According to the National Weather Service’s (NWS) climate prediction center, our forecast is for normal seasonal precipitation (i.e. rain), but likely cooler-than-normal temperatures. And that could lead to snow or ice during December.
For those of us who’ll be holiday shopping or travelling to spend time with loved ones, that means it’s important to plan ahead.
“This is the time of year to dig in and start preparing for winter weather here,” says NWS meteorologist Reid Wolcott. “Winterize your vehicles, winterize your homes.”
For those who’ll be travelling, it’s especially important to winterize your vehicle. That means:
- Check the battery (it has to work harder in cold weather)
- Replace old wiper blades and upgrade to winter-grade windshield cleaner
- Lubricate door locks
- Check engine oil and coolant
- Replace worn tires and carry chains
- Add or update your emergency kit to include
- Gloves, blanket, shovel, ice scraper, reflective vest, jumper cables, flares, cell phone charger, safety triangle
- Don’t drop below a half-tank of gas
And while you’re at it, maybe buy or assemble a couple emergency car kits to give as gifts. (Perhaps nothing says “I care” like a folding shovel and mylar blanket ;- )
