BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – After over 900 submissions, the City of Bellingham has landed on a name for its newest pier.
The city council got right to the point during their most recent council meeting with their unanimous vote to approve the name “Little Squalicum Pier” for the new walkway at Little Squalicum Park.
The pier was originally constructed by the Olympic Portland Cement Company in 1912 to carry railcars before a portion of it was donated to the city in 2021.
Staff from the city’s Parks and Recreation Department recommended the name before it was approved by the council. Prior to this, over a thousand community members submitted names and picked which name they liked best.
The Salish Seawalk, Squalkway to Heaven and the Pier of Subdued Excitement were among the most popular choices.
But it was “Christ is Lord Pier” that got the most traction with over 400 votes.
Renovation work is scheduled to run from now through February 2025 and will offer up to 1,200 feet of public access over Bellingham Bay.
The pier is expected to open to the public in spring 2025.
