BREAKING: Pedestrian struck by southbound train in Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A pedestrian was hit by a train in Mount Vernon earlier Tuesday afternoon.

Mount Vernon Police received a report about the incident a little before 12:30 p.m.

The collision happened at the S. Third Street and Montgomery Street railroad crossing. According to a press release, when officers and EMS arrived on the scene, the victim was already deceased.

An investigation determined that a BNSF train going southbound struck the pedestrian when they attempted to cross the tracks. The victim is not identified at this time pending notification of next-of-kin and the victim’s intent has not been determined.

Traffic at the crossing was diverted for a significant amount of time according to WSDOT and Mount Vernon’s Lieutenant Dave Shackleton. That area has since reopened to traffic.

Officials are asking for anyone that witnessed the collision or knows information related to the incident to contact Mount Vernon Police.
