BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A mainstay of Bellingham’s craft brewery scene will be closing its doors next year.

Boundary Bay Brewery owners Ed Bennett and Janet Lightner said in a statement that they’ll be closing their doors on Railroad Avenue next September.

It was the first craft brewery to open in Bellingham after being converted from a gym in 1995. The brewery has been locally owned and independently operated in downtown Bellingham ever since. Bennett and Lightner said that they didn’t know what the future held for them when they first opened.

“In the three decades since, the community and our staff have rewarded us with more than we could have imagined; being a part of the Bellingham community and sharing our love of craft beer with you has been an honor,” said Bennett and Lightner in the announcement. “Thirty years in business is an accomplishment which was possible because of a dedicated team and supportive community, which we don’t take for granted.”

Ed and Janet added that the building’s lease was due to expire and is going to be put up for sale by the owner. They decided that the best option moving forward was to retire.

The announcement comes as the brewery prepares to celebrate its 30th year in business. The owners assure the community that service will remain consistent through September 2025 so the business can “fully enjoy” its final year.
