BLAINE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The Blaine School District will be laying off employees across the board after expected budget cuts.

An expected 11 to 12% cut will happen ahead of the 2024-2025 school year to administrative staff, classified staff and certificated staff. That percentage amounts to around 30 staff members throughout the district.

MyBellinghamNow previously reported on the budget cuts; the school board sent letters to faculty notifying them of potential layoffs.

Though the budget is not finalized, the biggest cuts may be seen at the younger levels.

An elementary school principal and a handful of teachers and special educators are noted as places to see cuts. The cuts come as a way to deal with the $2.5 million deficit the district is facing after enrollment reductions, and other financial issues.

Last year, the district laid off 50 staff members due to similar budget issues.
