BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Several schools in Bellingham will save thousands of dollars by going green this year.
Bellingham Public Schools announced that its having solar arrays installed on five schools over this summer and fall.
The project is being funded by cap-and-invest dollars through the state’s Climate Commitment Act.
“In Bellingham Public Schools, we are proud of our commitment to sustainability and renewable energy initiatives,” BPS Chief Operating Officer Jessica Sankey said. “In partnership with valued local businesses Western Solar and Cascadia Renewables, we look forward to the positive impact these solar arrays will have on both the environment and educational opportunities for students.”
Alderwood, Happy Valley and Sunnyland elementary schools will all receive the panels, along with Shuksan Middle School and Options High School.
The district also plans to develop a lesson plan that will use the solar arrays to offer students hands-on experience with clean energy development.
“This project exemplifies what’s possible when local partnerships, public funding, and shared purpose come together,” Markus Virta, managing partner at Cascadia Renewables, said. “These systems aren’t just about carbon reduction—they’re about equipping students with the knowledge and tools to lead in the clean energy future.
BPS says the solar panels are expected to save $165,000 in utility fees over their first year.
