BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – More cleanup projects within Bellingham Bay will be nearing completion this year.

The Washington Department of Ecology has released details about the work crews have done at 12 cleanup sites throughout the past year.

Currently, five of those sites are in the cleanup phase as crews work to remove contaminated soil and groundwater.

Four other areas are now listed as “clean,” but will remain on Ecology’s cleanup list for further monitoring.

That includes the former Eldridge Municipal Landfill, the north part of the former Georgia Pacific plant, and part of the Whatcom Waterway.

Most of 2026 will focus on design plans to clean other areas around Bellingham Bay, such as the southern part of the former Georgia Pacific plant and another section of the I & J waterway.

The first section of I & J is expected to finish cleanup work by the end of this year, along with the upland area of the Harris Avenue Shipyard.
