As Weather Cools, Pest Prevention Becomes Key for Whatcom County Residents

As cooler weather sets in, residents in Whatcom County may notice more unwanted visitors creeping indoors. Local pest control experts say that fall is prime time for insects, rodents and other pests to seek warmth and shelter inside homes.

“Just like us, rodents and insects want a nice warm and dry place to spend the winter. Preventative action can prevent pests from making your home a winter hideaway,” said Steve Cornwell, co-founder and president of Bio Bug.

Experts recommend sealing up cracks, gaps and openings around the home to keep pests out. Caulking window and door frames, fixing torn screens, and installing door sweeps can reduce easy entry points. Homeowners are also encouraged to check for gaps around utility lines and vents.

Keeping the home clean and clutter-free is another key defense. Food crumbs, unsealed garbage, and standing water can attract ants, cockroaches and rodents. Regular vacuuming, wiping down surfaces and storing food in airtight containers can make homes less appealing to pests.

Yards and outdoor areas should not be overlooked, according to Bio Bug. Overgrown vegetation, firewood stacked against the house and clogged gutters can create hiding spots and breeding grounds. Trimming shrubs, moving firewood away from walls and cleaning gutters regularly can cut down on potential problems.

The pest control professionals at Bio Bug note that Whatcom County’s damp climate provides an ideal environment for many insects. Spiders, ants, silverfish and beetles are among the most common invaders, along with rodents seeking warmth in the colder months.

Residents are reminded that prevention is often the most effective solution. With a few seasonal maintenance steps, homeowners can help keep bugs and pests where they belong — outside.
