BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) -The final ship has arrived at the Bellingham Shipping Terminal to remove the last of the scrap metal heaps from ABC Recycling.
ABC spokesperson Riley Sweeney says they started loading about 34,000 metric tons of metal onto the 590-foot bulk carrier Ken Haru on Monday, June 3. The loading is expected to last through Monday, June 10, before being delivered to smelters in Bangladesh.
Port of Bellingham commissioners voted in March to end their contract with ABC and gave the Canadian recycling company until June 30 to remove all scrap metal piles from the Bellingham waterfront. It came after the Port gave ABC a notice of default for breaching multiple conditions of their lease, including the repeated violation of Department of Ecology regulations.
ABC has until Oct. 31 to vacate their offices in Bellingham.
