WWU hurdlers sweep GNAC track athlete of the week honors

Western Washington University Track & Field team members Cordell Cummings and Molly House have been named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track Athletes of the Week.

The pair of Viking hurdlers earned the weekly conference honors after both recorded first-place finishes in the 400m hurdles at the PLU Open on Saturday in Tacoma.

Cummings, a junior out of Lake Stevens and Arlington High School, won the 400m hurdles in 54.17 for the fastest time in the GNAC this season and 5th-fastest in all of NCAA Division II. Cummings also set a PR in the 100m at 11.26 finishing 2nd at the PLU Open while making his 2019 outdoor debut. He won the 60m hurdles at the GNAC Indoor Championships, the 110m high hurdles at the 2018 GNAC Outdoor Championships and the 400m hurdles at the 2017 GNAC Outdoor Championships.

House, a sophomore out of Auburn’s Mountainview High School, also won the 400m at the PLU Open setting a PR in 1:06.03. Her time is tops in the GNAC this season and 17th-best in NCAA Division II. House also set a PR in the 100 hurdles finishing 3rd at the PLU Open in 16.28, 6th-best in the GNAC.

This is the first GNAC Athlete of the Week awards for both Cummings and House.

Also nominated for GNAC Field Athletes of the Week was sophomore Avery Lux and freshman Paige Shimkus. Lux was the top collegiate finisher in the hammer throw at the PLU Open with a throw of 54.90m/180-1 for the 4th-best mark in WWU outdoor history and currently the No. 4 mark in NCAA II. Shimkus won the javelin competition with a throw of 46.34m/152-0 for the 10th-best mark in program history and 18th-best in GNAC history.
