BELLINGHAM, Wash. — You can expect a big spike in the number of 7th graders on Whatcom County buses this spring.

Whatcom Smart Trips visited classrooms throughout the county in March to teach 7th graders how to ride the public bus while providing the nearly 2,000 participating students free bus passes good until June.

The two-year pilot project kicked off in 2016 to encourage 7th graders to travel independently.

Successful results convinced WSDOT to renew funding for the 2018-2019 program.
