BELLINGHAM, WA. – (KGMI.com) Minor flooding closed a handful of roadways in Whatcom County.

WSDOT says Highway 20 near Diablo Lake remains closed just past Newhalem due to floodwaters.

And some roads in Whatcom County, including parts of Marine Drive are closed due to minor flooding.

Hannegan south of Lynden was also closed overnight, but Public Works says they reopened it around 6 am this morning.

Emergency Management Deputy Director John Gargett says they did see some water covering Highway 9 near Acme on Tuesday morning, December 5th, but waters have since receded.

In Ferndale, the Nooksack crested at around 16.5 feet last night.

Gargett says residents should be prepared for longer commutes.

Use caution if you do come across water covering the roadways and never drive around road closed signs.

Meanwhile, the Skagit River has flooded in much of Skagit County.

After Monday night’s heavy rainfall, national aid has been deployed to the area.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also started repairing the Hamilton levee Monday.

The Skagit River peaked at 34 feet of water overnight Tuesday in Concrete, but waters there are currently receding.

An area near Mount Vernon is also predicted to reach a height of nearly 30 feet.

The Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter at Hamilton First Baptist Church in Sedro-Woolley that opened at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 5th.

The City of Sedro-Woolley wants to remind drivers to not drive over flooded roads.

And residents are advised to be prepared to take action in protecting homes, livestock and families from floodwaters.
