BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Longtime Whatcom County Prosecuting Attorney Dave McEachran is retiring.

He’s been the county’s top prosecutor since 1975, but has announced he won’t run for re-election in the fall.

The Bellingham Herald reports McEachran has tried some of Whatcom County’s biggest cases including Kenneth Bianchi, L.A.’s Hillside Strangler who also murdered two women in Bellingham, and others that set precedent in Washington criminal law.

Bellingham attorney James Erb and Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Eric Richey have announced they’re running for McEachran’s position.
