BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Fireworks officially went on sale in Washington Sunday, but with wildfire concerns and city ordinances, there are few places you can actually set them off yourself.

Blaine, Ferndale, Lynden and Everson have restricted when fireworks can be bought and used, while Bellingham has banned them entirely except for public permitted displays.

The Fire Marshal’s Office says Sumas and Nooksack don’t have their own rules on the matter and simply follow state law, which allows morning and afternoon use June 29 – July 5.

Unincorporated Whatcom County has more restrictions on when setting off fireworks is allowed:

  • July 3: 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM
  • July 4: 6:00 PM – Midnight
  • July 5: 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Large fireworks, like M-80s, and improvised explosive devices are prohibited and many fireworks bought on tribal land become illegal once taken off the reservation.
