OLYMPIA, Wash. — Data from state and local tax collections in fiscal year 2016 show Washington state relies the most heavily on sales taxes or consumption taxes.
The Tax Foundation looked at Census Bureau data and found 46.4% of all Washington taxes came from sales tax.
The foundation says the high reliance on sales tax stems from the state opting out of corporate and individual income taxes.
But, it says Washington does levy what it calls a “harmful” gross receipts tax on businesses.
WalletHub reports that when combining a state’s individual income tax, sales and excise tax, and property tax, Washington has the 32nd highest overall tax burden, due in large part to having no individual income tax.
