BELLINGHAM, WA – Washington is the worst state in the country for retail theft, according to the results of a recent study.

Forbes looked at retail crime statistics across different states as stores such as Target continue to close due to theft loss.

They found that Washington has seen the largest impact by retail theft, with an average of nearly $350 in stolen goods per resident from 2021.

The US average is about $170 lost per resident.

Forbes also reports that Washington accounts for 48% more retail theft than expected based on its share of the country’s population.

Larceny thefts in the state were the second-highest per capita and have become more of an issue in recent years.

Washington’s overall retail theft score was graded 100 out of 100, with Washington D.C as the next closest area with 88 out of 100.
