ELLENSBURG & LACEY, Wash. – A blazing fast time in the 100m, a top-5 time in program history in the 110m Hurdles and a top-10 pole vault mark highlighted a great day of competition for the Western Washington University Track & Field program on Saturday.
The Vikings were split across the state, with a majority of the team at the Jay Hammer Invitational hosted by Saint Martin’s University in Lacey and a trio of throwers at the CWU Wildcat Invitational in Ellensburg.
Freshman sprinter Karlington Anunagba turned in the performance of the day winning the 100m at the Jay Hammer Invite in a time of 10.33. The speedy time is the second-fastest in both WWU and Great Northwest Athletic Conference history, trailing only the 10.22 set by former Viking All-American Alex Donigian in 2015. Anunagba, a freshman from Lagos, Nigeria, also recorded an NCAA II provisional mark and likely will be in the top spot in the nation with his time.
Junior Cordell Cummings set a PR in the 110m Hurdles finishing 2nd at the Jay Hammer Invite in 14.81. The time moves him up to 5th in WWU history, just behind his father Trey, who clocked a 14.76 in 1986.
Sophomore Bryant Welch finished 3rd in the 100m in 10.80, setting a personal best and entering the WWU top-10 in a tie for 7th place.
At the CWU Invite, sophomore Ben Malquist set a PR while finishing 2nd in the shot put with a mark of 15.56m/51-0.75 for the 9th-best mark in WWU outdoor history.
Junior pole vaulter Lexi Perry recorded the top mark at the Jay Hammer Invite clearing 3.64m/11-11.25, moving up to 6th in the WWU outdoor record book. Her mark was also just short of the NCAA II provisional standard of 3.65m/11-11.75.
